Stan Bialek
Host | Jazz from Aspen | Aspen Hot Wax

After getting laid off from Northwest Airlines, Stan Bialek, host of Aspen Hot Wax and a host of Jazz from Aspen, came to Aspen from Maryland in January 1974 for a month to learn to ski. He didn't go back to Maryland until May! And he discovered that Aspen has much more to offer than just the skiing. After living in Aspen part time for nine years, he moved here full-time in 1983. In 2000, Stan was dropping off his daughter at a gymnastics class at the Red Brick Center for the Arts when he ran into good friend Scott Harper, volunteer host of Tuesday Nite Straight Ahead on Aspen Public Radio. After hearing about Scott's gig at the station, Stan was enthused. (As a teenager, one of his fantasies was to be a Radio DJ.) He credits Scott and Andrea Young, a current Aspen Public Radio board member and the original host of Aspen Hot Wax, for sharing their broadcasting and musical expertise with him. "I became Mr. Fill-in," Stan said. "And when Andrea moved away, I inherited her show." He also became the permanent host (alternating with Gary Whipple) of Jazz from Aspen on Monday nights. Stan has made a name for himself by picking theme shows for Aspen Hot Wax - an oldies show - to commemorate artists' birthdays and other milestones, such as "Pioneers of Rock and Roll," "B-sides" and "The Day the Music Died." Stan is now partially retired from his day job as the owner of The National Publishers Service. He is married and has a teenage daughter. He has always loved music and dabbles with the guitar. For his tireless dedication, Stan was the 2008 recipient of the Ned Cochran Volunteer of the Year Award. Stan explained, "The education I have gotten in broadcasting and the increased knowledge of music since being at Aspen Public Radio is priceless. It is an absolute pleasure to be part of this talented family at Aspen Public Radio." Stan can be contacted via email at sbialek@comcast.net.
