Aspen Ideas Festival 2018: Health Reform: Where Do Conservatives Go From Here?

Despite repeated attempts, Congress has not repealed the Affordable Care Act, although the Trump Administration has chipped away at some of its provisions. The requirement that all insurance plans offer “ten essential benefits” has been softened and the individual mandate to carry a minimum level of coverage has been repealed.

Conservatives remain united in their distaste for the law and want bolder action, but they are divided about where to go next. They are vigorously debating marketplace reforms and health savings accounts, strategies to overhaul Medicare and Medicaid, and ways to return more authority to the states. Where will the conversation on the right lead?

Aspen native Elizabeth Stewart-Severy is excited to be making a return to both the Red Brick, where she attended kindergarten, and the field of journalism. She has spent her entire life playing in the mountains and rivers around Aspen, and is thrilled to be reporting about all things environmental in this special place. She attended the University of Colorado with a Boettcher Scholarship, and graduated as the top student from the School of Journalism in 2006. Her lifelong love of hockey lead to a stint working for the Colorado Avalanche, and she still plays in local leagues and coaches the Aspen Junior Hockey U-19 girls.
