Aspen officials to speak at climate symposium

City of Aspen

Mayor Steve Skadron and the city’s climate action department launched the Compact of Colorado Communities last May. They are now partnering with the governor’s office to host a symposium on climate preparedness and clean energy. Governor John Hickenlooper has since recognized it as the leading network of local governments working on climate.

Skadron will discuss the role of government and industry in driving climate action, and councilwoman Ann Mullins will moderate a town-hall style discussion on resilience. Ashley Perl and Laura Armstrong with the climate action department will present on transportation and Aspen’s electric vehicle plan.

The city is also being considered for an award for its work developing a “greenhouse gas reduction toolkit.”

Representatives from all Roaring Fork Valley governments are expected to participate in the symposium, which begins Wednesday and runs through Friday in Denver.

Aspen native Elizabeth Stewart-Severy is excited to be making a return to both the Red Brick, where she attended kindergarten, and the field of journalism. She has spent her entire life playing in the mountains and rivers around Aspen, and is thrilled to be reporting about all things environmental in this special place. She attended the University of Colorado with a Boettcher Scholarship, and graduated as the top student from the School of Journalism in 2006. Her lifelong love of hockey lead to a stint working for the Colorado Avalanche, and she still plays in local leagues and coaches the Aspen Junior Hockey U-19 girls.
