Aspen Pitkin County Airport terminal concepts narrowed to two

Aspen Pitkin County Airport

The Pitkin County Commissioners have chosen two concepts for a new airport terminal. The decision comes after lots of public feedback.

The decision is one step in a long process. Airport officials drew up four building concepts including a one-story, two-story, split level and what’s called a “nested” design. The public favored the latter, partly because the building's perceived height is the lowest of all four. All concepts are 80,000 square feet - a concern for the elected leaders. Commissioner Rachel Richards said she prefers not to overbuild, but she also doesn’t want to shortchange what’s offered inside the terminal.

"I don’t want an ugly building, but I also don’t want a building so small that at the end of the day we’re saying, ‘Where are people supposed to hang their coats?’.”

An 80,000 square foot terminal isn’t final. The size could go down as the process moves forward. The commissioners’ choices of a hybrid of the two story and nested ideas as well as concept two: the split level, will now be presented to the public for further comment.
