Basalt reduces volunteer hours asked of retirees in affordable housing

On Tuesday night, Basalt Town Council adopted changes to the town’s community housing guidelines.

There aren’t any retirees in Basalt’s affordable housing currently; if there were, they’d be required to volunteer 1,000 hours a year to remain in their houses.

A representative from the Basalt Affordable Community Housing Committee (BACH) likened the requirement to slavery.

BACH recommended the council reduce the required number of volunteer hours and adopt a sliding scale.

Retirees between ages 65 and 70 will have to volunteer 500 hours. Those ages 71 to 75 will volunteer half that, and those over 75 wouldn’t have to volunteer at all.
