Basalt: There are more pot licenses than places to put new businesses

Elise Thatcher

Basalt may look at allowing marijuana businesses in a few more locations around town, after officials tightened up restrictions last summer.

Marijuana shops are limited by zoning, location and distance from schools and other establishments. The town has three licenses available and a list for prospective marijuana shop operators.

Basalt manager Mike Scanlon said he’s been getting letters from such operators, saying “You understand that it’s really not a list if there isn’t a location. Would you consider there being other locations?”

One shop, RootsRX, currently operates on the southside of Highway 82. Options are limited even there, because property owners aren’t open to it, there are restrictions within private development and other barriers.
