Pitkin County and the City of Aspen are re-visiting the process that could bring a bicycle trail to a short segment of Castle Creek Road.
Castle Creek Road is narrow, with steep embankments, and it’s also popular for road bikers and sightseers. Plus, that’s the only route for students at Country Day School and the Aspen Music School to get to classes. So Pitkin County and the City of Aspen open space and trails programs are asking the public for input about a trail that would connect the Marolt Trail to the school campus.
A similar attempt failed a decade ago, when nearby homeowners sued the county over code violations. Gary Tennenbaum, director of Pitkin County Open Space and Trails, said this time will be different.
“We know the code is clear, we know what we need to do. And this time, we’re trying to do a transparent public process and get involved from a wide range of stakeholders,” he said.
The trail would be less than a mile long. There will be a public meeting on July 24.
