CDOT to tap local transit committee for Grand Ave. Bridge replacement

Elise Thatcher

To replace the aging Grand Avenue Bridge in Glenwood Springs, the Colorado Department of Transportation needs more money. On Thursday (7/16) CDOT will request funding from the Elected Officials Transportation Committee.

The replacement project includes a wider, longer bridge and a temporary closure during construction, of the main artery through town. It’ll cost tens of millions of dollars. CDOT, a statewide bridge commission and utility companies are chipping in. Garfield County has pledged $3 million. But, more is needed.

CDOT is negotiating with Eagle County, Glenwood Springs and the Elected Officials Transportation Committee, or EOTC, on possible contributions. Steve Olson is with CDOT.

"It’s critical to the success of this project. This project wouldn’t happen without the help of those local communities and the other agency (EOTC). Right now CDOT and the Colorado Bridge Enterprise (Governing Commission) do not have sufficient funds to cover this solely on our own."

CDOT wants agreements in place by late August. The agency meets with the EOTC in Snowmass at 4 pm Thursday. The Committee is made up of elected leaders from Aspen, Snowmass Village and Pitkin County.
