Council kicks the can on future of City Hall

City of Apsen

After nearly five hours of deliberation Tuesday night, Aspen City Council couldn’t come to a consensus on whether to build a new $31 million City Hall.

Council was given a few different options on how to house all of the city’s departments. Council members Ann Mullins and Art Daily want the “Galena” option. That would put all city services in one 52,000-square-foot building across from Rio Grande Park.

Currently, city departments are scattered in several locations where the municipal government pays rent in some cases. Other departments are located in city-owned buildings, including the old armory building that serves as City Hall today.

Mayor Steve Skadron wants what’s known as a “re-use” option, which is using the city’s various buildings to house government employees. He says building a new city hall at Galena Plaza would forever change Aspen. Councilman Bert Myrin agreed, and his colleague, Adam Frisch couldn't make up his mind.

City staff will present another set of options later.
