Democrats outspend Republicans in Garfield County

In this election cycle, Colorado Democrats have outspent their Republican counterparts in the contests for president and congress. It was the opposite in 2014; Garfield County exemplifies this trend.

The Center for Responsive Politics is a nonprofit, nonpartisan research group in Washington, D.C. They track contributions of $200 or more to federal candidates, parties, PACs and super PACs.

As of Oct. 28, Garfield County Republicans had contributed over $264,000. This is just a little more than what they spent in 2014. Garfield Democrats this year spent $353,000, which is three times what they spent in 2014.

These totals include primary contributions -- so money raised by candidates like Ted Cruz and Bernie Sanders are included.

Rick Palacio, chair of the Colorado Democratic Party, said the differences in Democratic contributions between 2014 and 2016 reflects differences in enthusiasm. Republicans across the state are discouraged by their choices, he said, whereas the Democrats appear more united.

It is also a presidential election year, so that plays a role, too. The Chair of Colorado’s Republican Party wasn’t available for comment.
