Festival Notes - August 5, 2015

  Today is Wednesday, August 5th.
Join Aspen Music Festival President and CEO Alan Fletcher, Music Director Robert Spano and Aspen Opera Theater Director Edward Berkeley today at noon in Paepcke Auditorium. They’ll be examining the 19th century view of exoticism and orientalism in opera as a run-up to Friday evening’s semi-staged performance of Verdi’s Aida in the Benedict Music Tent. That performance will feature the Aspen Festival Orchestra, Colorado Symphony Chorus, and a star-studded cast of singers. These High Notes programs are always free, and offer fascinating insights about the music and musicians you’re enjoying this summer.

First Glimpse, a free program of new works by this summer’s composition students, takes place at 3 today in Harris Concert Hall.
Mountain Living presents a house music chamber music recital today at 3:30 in a private residence.
Nicholas McGegan conducts A Baroque Evening at 8 tonight in Harris Concert Hall. Hear a Telemann suite, Boccherini Cello Concerto, Bach Violin Concerto, and Rameau ballet music in what are sure to be effervescent and exhilarating performances.

Classical music reporter Chris Mohr has loved classical music since he was twelve. “And I owe it all to radio,” Chris explains. “I grew up in a farm town east of Cleveland. One day I turned on the local classical radio station. They were playing Vivaldi, and it was like the gates of heaven opened up to me!" Chris is also a composer, and is working on a 53-note-to-the-octave oratorio, "Melodies of the Shoreless Sea." This is his ninth summer working for Aspen Public Radio.
