Local author examines government role in financial crisis

American Enterprise Institute

A resident of the Upper Roaring Fork Valley has written a book about what caused the recent financial crisis. Old Snowmass resident Peter Wallison was White House Council for President Ronald Reagan and later served on the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission. The group was appointed by Congress to review what happened when the economy crumbled, starting in 2008. Wallison found the commission’s results lacking, and did his own research. It led to his new book, in which Wallison details what government decisions he believes helped cause the meltdown.

“It was actually begun in the Clinton Administration but it was followed through completely in the George W. Bush Administration,” says Wallison, when asked whether it’s to be expected that a Republican would criticize the government for causing the financial crisis. “This is not actually a partisan issue.”

The book is called “Hidden in Plain Sight: What Really Caused the World’s Worst Financial Crisis and Why It Could Happen Again.” Wallison and the Pitkin County Republicans are holding a book signing tonight at the Aspen Square Hotel.
