The annual Black Ski Summit wraps up on Saturday in Snowmass Village. The week-long event is celebrating its 42nd year.

The event has its roots in Snowmass Village. The National Brotherhood of Skiers started in the early 1970’s when African Americans on the ski slopes were a rarity and black ski clubs an exception.

Now, the NBS has 55 member clubs and about 1000 people are attending the Black Ski Summit in Snowmass this week. President Diana Starks says the NBS raises money for programs that increase winter sports participation among African American youth.

"Our purpose is to identify and develop athletes of color who will win winter sports competitions in the hopes of having one or a few of them take on the Olympics."

She estimates half a million children have benefited from the dollars raised at events like the Black Ski Summit.
