New wildlife ordinance has teeth

aspenpitkin.com

After a series of incidents between humans and wildlife - particularly with bears -  it is now illegal to harass wild animals in the City of Aspen. The new ordinance doubles fees for harassing wildlife within city limits.

The ordinance passed last week is meant to protect bears, deer, elk and other animals that wander into the city limits. Last summer, a mother bear and two cubs drew the attention of locals and visitors, who gathered around their perch on the Aspen Pedestrian Mall to photograph the animals.

Wildlife harassment can be anything from chasing, cornering, taunting or crowding wildlife. Violation of the ordinance will result in escalating fines starting at $250 and a court appearance on the third offence.
