Poetry Gets A Competitive Twist At The Temporary's Slam

The Temporary

Meta Sarmiento is a Filipino poet and rapper.  He’ll be a guest judge at a poetry slam at the Temporary on Wednesday.

Slam poetry is poetry that’s performed on stage, but it’s a competition, too. Judges score each poem on a scale of one to ten.

Sarmiento said the audience can expect to see lots of energy on stage on Wednesday.

“When you’re performing a poem, you give it an extra power because the audience can actually feel the words as opposed to just reading the words on a page.”

Sarmiento said that the highest scores tend to go to poems that get strong reactions from the audience.
