'PRINT WORKS' Explores Modern Take On Ancient Art Form

Carbondale Arts

A new exhibit at Carbondale’s R2 Gallery highlights modern twists on one of the oldest art forms...printmaking.

Curator Reina Katzenburger says that the show “Printworks” explores why, in this digital age, some artists still commit to engraving, etching and woodcutting by hand.

She says the answer is clear when someone sees the time and effort that goes into a handmade print.

“And they can just feel the difference--they may not be able to articulate why they love it so much-- and I think that quality is what really maintains its popularity," she said.

While they honor the traditions behind this art form, the exhibiting artists in this show also push boundaries. One of the artists can’t find an etching press big enough to make his prints.

“So he rents a steam roller, like a bulldozer, to drive over the print on the paper and that’s how he prints,” said Katzenburger.

“Print Works” runs through September 7.
