'Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead' opens at Colorado Mountain College

The season opener for Sopris Theatre Company at Colorado Mountain College is Tom Stoppard’s play “Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead.” It starts Friday.

“Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” is an absurdist, existentialist tragicomedy. It was first staged at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1966.

Stoppard’s play focuses on the two minor characters from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The two protagonists express confusion over the events taking place without them as major characters from Hamlet carry on.

“Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” won a Tony Award in 1968 and the NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play that same year.

Sopris Theatre Company’s production is directed by G. Thomas Cochran and will be staged at the New Space Theatre at Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley.
