For this primary election, voters can only choose one candidate. The two with the most votes advance to the November election, according to the Home Rule Charter. Greg Poschman, Scott Writer and Hawk Greenway, all longtime valley residents, are vying for the seat. It is currently held by Michael Owsley, who has to step down because of term limits.A polling place will be set up at the Aspen Jewish Community Center for early voting from June 20 to June 27. Ballots returned in the mail should be sent eight days prior to the election deadline — 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28.

"Traditional" design chosen for new Pitkin County public safety building

Poss Architecture and Planning

Elected leaders in Pitkin County chose a concept Tuesday for what a new Public Safety and Administration Building will look like.

The architects describe the concepts as the “skin” of the new 22,000 square foot building. It’ll be behind the Courthouse Plaza and house the sheriff’s department and other county offices.

The County Commissioners chose to pursue what’s called concept four. It’s more traditional than three other options with windows and a roof that match the nearby courthouse. With recent construction in Aspen, Commissioner Patti Clapper says it’s important to maintain a historic look.

"There have been a lot of concerns from people that I’ve heard about the changes the community’s been making that are so dramatic, and I think we have to keep that in mind."

The commissioners want tweaks to concept four, such as a different roof and simpler entryway. The architects will come back with more detailed drawings in the spring.
