Training Program for Adaptive Athletes Scales Back Due to Cuts

teamavsc.org

A training program for paralympic athletes in Aspen is in need of funding. Federal dollars that once paid for the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club’s adaptive program ran out this fall. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs supplies the money and amounts for clubs like AVSC usually range from $250,000 to $500,000 dollars per year.

But, the club has had to adapt. The program has been scaled back during a time when many of the athletes are preparing to compete in the Paralympic Games in Sochi in March. Earlier this month, an anonymous donation propped up the program for the next three months but after that, funding is in question. Aspen Public Radio's Marci Krivonen spoke with AVSC’s Excellence Director Walt Evans.
