Aspen Non Profit Sees Jump In Domestic Violence Reporting

responsehelps.org

The problem of domestic violence is being talked about nationally after footage of abuse by an NFL player went public earlier this week. And,  the National Domestic Violence Hotline reportedly has seen a spike in calls.

Domestic violence is a problem in the Roaring Fork Valley, but more victims may be getting help. The advocacy group RESPONSE works in Aspen, Basalt and El Jebel. In two years, the number of people the group serves has doubled. Last year, the RESPONSE helped nearly 600 people. Jill Gruenberg is Advocacy and Prevention Program Coordinator.

"I’m happy when our numbers increase because I think it speaks to the fact that we’re doing a better job of letting the community know that we exist, that we’re here to help people and people are perhaps feeling more comfortable in reaching out for help," she says.

RESPONSE brings violence prevention efforts to local schools. And, now the group’s looking to do trainings with student athletic teams. RESPONSE’s 24-hour hotline is 925-7233.
