Former Krabloonik Owner Sentenced in Animal Cruelty Case

The former owner of Krabloonik dog sledding kennel was sentenced today to 30 months of probation, with a condition that he cannot own a dog or have any interest in a business that has them.

Dan MacEachen also will have to pay a $5,000 fine and perform 120 hours of community service. He pleaded guilty last month to one count of animal cruelty. It was part of a plea deal with the District Attorney’s Office.  He was originally charged with eight counts of animal cruelty. The misdemeanor counts came in December of 2013, when the DA’s office seized eight dogs from the Snowmass Village operation that MacEachen owned for 40 years.

The DA’s office says the sled dogs were malnourished and in need of veterinary care. That was after two former employees alleged that animals were being neglected and abused.

Several people spoke on behalf of MacEachen during the sentencing hearing in front of Pitkin County Judge Erin Fernandez-Ely. That included Guy Courtney, the former general manager of the operation who was behind some of the abuse allegations.
