Today is a big day for a new Carbondale resident. The sculpture called “Sewing the Future,” is being dedicated. The twenty foot tall piece is planted in the middle of Carbondale’s new roundabout on Highway 133. Created by artist James Surls, it shows needles, a tree, and other elements arranged in a vase.
The sculpture was installed last November. “First of all, it was getting to be winter,” says organizer Sue Edelstein, explaining why the dedication didn’t happen then. “And second of all we really wanted it to be finished. And so the landscaping has been going in the last few days. We’ve got all the characters involved in town. And it just seemed like a good time for a celebration.”
The sculpture had generated some controversy last year about the amount of public input involved. Ultimately it was put in place at the end of a major Highway 133 project, that added the roundabout and widened the busy artery.
