PitCo 911 dispatch and other departments on the move

Carolyn Sackariason

Pitkin County officials are planning to move the 911 dispatch center out of town and near the airport. Aspen Public Radio’s Carolyn Sackariason reports.

Lease negotiations are underway between Pitkin County and the fire district to put the emergency communications center in the North 40 fire station. The move is necessitated by the construction of a new public safety facility that will begin in the spring. The center is currently housed in the county jail building.

The department plans to take over the North 40 space this fall, because it will take some time to set up shop. Pitkin County Sheriff Joe DiSalvo says it can get complicated.

“This is not unplugging the clock radio and plugging it in someplace else. Fiber needs to be run, antennas have to be put up. Dispatch consoles have to be removed so yea, it’s a pretty big project,” he says.

The county’s new facility, which will be built behind the courthouse, as well as the renovation of the annex next door, is displacing other departments, too. Government officials plan to rent space in downtown Aspen for the clerk and recorder’s office. Sources say lease negotiations are happening now. Carolyn Sackariason, Aspen Public Radio News.
