Basalt students head to state robot competition again

Allison Johnson

Science students from Basalt Middle School will once again square off with their peers from around the state. They’re heading for a statewide robotics championship this winter.  The team of seven students will compete in Denver in January, to test their skills in programming robots to pick things up and carry out a variety of other tasks.

The competition includes tackling a bigger societal problem as well, which includes “[finding] a way to come up with an innovative solution to deal with trash,” says teacher and coach Kerry Williams. “And they chose drawing awareness to microbeads and how they’re included in various products.”

The tiny materials are often in beauty products and can be eaten by fish and other aquatic creatures. The Basalt students earned their spot in the statewide contest after winning a regional competition this past weekend. If that sounds familiar, the Basalt Middle School team has gone to the state championships for the last three years.
