Related gets thumbs up on Base Village

Days after Related Company announced that it would remain the master developer of Base Village, it gained final approval for the plans yesterday.

The council, staff and community members are beat up and tired of waiting for Base Village to go “vertical,” according to comments made at yesterday’s Snowmass Village Town Council Meeting.

Developer Related Company still contends that work on the Brush Creek Roundabout will begin this spring and the remaining Base Village components will be complete in 2018.

Mayor Markey Butler stressed her distrust for Related based on unkept promises in the past and its recent attempt to sell the Base Village assets.

“When I walked out of here last week I said I’m back to where we were in 2014. The same damn place” said Butler.

The council discussed the development for more than four hours, questioning everything from height variances to the definition of “public amenity” in regards to a plaza that is meant to serve as a community space.

Council members Alyssa Shenk and Bob Sirkus pushed to delay a decision until the next scheduled meeting on January 4th. However, a purchase agreement between Related and Aspen Skiing Company set to expire on December 31st is contingent on council approval of the development plans. The council voted four to one in favor of the land use application. Bob Sirkus was the dissenting vote.

Specifics will now be worked out between town staff and Related, final plans need to be completed within 90 days.
