Carbondale inches forward on short term rentals, affordable housing

Carbondale Trustees are getting ready tackle the affordable housing question again. Trustees are considering key questions: What is the town government’s role in dealing with affordable housing? What are median and average prices of homes in Carbondale, and how are current policies are affecting housing affordability?

John Leybourne is with the town’s planning department. In an interview Thursday, Leybourne said one consideration is when development proposals trigger requirements.

“Right now if you have five units, you have to provide a certain amount of affordable housing,” he explained. “But most projects we see coming in are only 4 units, so they don’t have to provide that 5th unit.”

Those issues will be discussed at a joint meeting with the planning and zoning commissioners next month.
