Documentary series at Aspen Institute announced

In addition to high-profile speakers, the artistic components of the Aspen Institute has upped its game.

The first film profiles Maya Angelou. “Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise” tells the story of the writer, and uses her voice to weave in and out of the narration as Oprah, the rapper Common, and others reflect on her life. It will be shown on July 25.

On Aug. 1, “A Good American” tells the story of an NSA intelligence agency that was scrapped three weeks before the 9/11 attacks.

“Author: The JT LeRoy Story” tells the story of JT LeRoy, a writer that didn’t exist. He was the brainchild of Laura Albert, a punk rock musician and phone sex operator. LeRoy was a sensation that would go to fashion events and the Cannes Film Festival.

The Aspen Institute has partnered with Aspen Film to bring the documentaries here.

The three films are being screened at Paepcke Auditorium and are open to the public.
