Assault Survivor Finds Herself After Going 'Off Trail'

Jane Parnell was the first woman to climb the 100 highest peaks in Colorado, an experience she details in her memoir. As Christin Kay reports, she’ll be discussing the book in the Roaring Fork Valley this week.

Parnell took to mountaineering as a way to overcome the trauma of being raped when she was 21 years old. She said that, after the assault, she felt disassociated from her body.

"Mountaineering helped me regain my relationship with my body in a healthier, more holistic way. I came to appreciate it a lot," she said.

Parnell will be reading from and discussing her memoir "Off Trail: Finding My Way Home in the Colorado Rockies" Monday at noon at the Pitkin County Library. She’ll also speak at Bookbinders in Basalt on Tuesday evening.
