Dory Light: 'I'm Gonna Let It Rip' At Aspen Community Church Organ Recital

Dory Light plays the organ for services at the Aspen Community Church most weekends. On Friday, she mixes it up for her first hometown, solo organ concert.

Light is the Director of Music at Aspen Community Church and a busy music teacher for kids throughout the Roaring Fork Valley. Before she moved here in 2002, she was a seasoned performer with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

She says Friday's concert won’t involve the liturgical pieces that many are used to hearing her play.

"They’re more concert pieces, and I love playing them, so I’m gonna let it rip, I’m gonna pull all the stops out, I’m gonna really show off the instrument,” she said.

“The instrument” is the church’s organ, which is the largest on the Western slope. Light says while its sound is powerful, she’ll show its softer side, too.

"Most people think, ‘Oh, an organ!  It’s like "Phantom of the Opera."' But it also can create the most poignant and intimate sounds, as well,” she said.

The concert, “Composers From Three Continents And An Island,” starts at 6:30 p.m.
