Thursday night, Pitkin County commissioners discuss the future of Aspen-Pitkin County airport in a special meeting. They will review recommendations set forth in the final report from the ASE Vision Committee, an advisory group of experts and community members.
The committee suggests the construction of a new terminal. Its final plan states, “ASE should not feel like a typical ‘anywhere’ airport” and envisions a new terminal of 75-90 thousand square feet, more than double the size of the existing terminal.
Another suggestion calls to widen the runway, making approach and landing easier. The report cites two national surveys of pilots which identified Aspen as the most challenging airport in the U.S.
The committee also laid out plans to reduce carbon emissions and noise, both by 30%.
On Thursday night, officials will revise a presentation about the suggested changes. On August 13, they will make that presentation at the Doerr-Hosier Center at Aspen Meadows and take public comment from a size-limited in-person crowd and those watching virtually.
A second, online-only, comment period will be held on August 17.
