A campaign to end abortions at 22 weeks and after in Colorado is pursuing several versions of a ballot measure in hopes of putting just one before voters in the 2020 election.

The first proposal would have made it a felony for doctors to perform abortions at that point unless a woman's life is at risk. It was rejected on procedural grounds after objections were filed.

Gov. Jared Polis announced Wednesday that the federal government has approved a reinsurance plan designed to lower premiums for individuals buying insurance on the Colorado health care exchange.

 The Democrat already had released projections showing that premiums next year for 400,000 Coloradans — about 8% of those buying insurance on the exchange — will drop by more than 18% with a reinsurance plan in place.

Federal land managers say they're reviewing a protest letter from the Colorado Department of Natural Resources over the Trump administration's management plan for public lands in the southwest corner of the state.

Department Director Dan Gibbs sent the U.S. Bureau of Land Management a letter Monday saying the plan doesn't do enough to protect the Gunnison sage grouse, which is a threatened species, or migrating wildlife.

Rescue personnel are working to retrieve the body of a man who fell to his death on a Colorado peak.

The Aspen Daily News reports the 61-year-old climber fell about 200 feet (61 meters) Wednesday on South Maroon Peak in the Elk Mountains near Aspen.

Colorado plans to add another tolled express lane on Interstate 70 near Idaho Springs.

The Denver Post reports the $70 million project west of Denver will include a 12-mile (19-kilometer) zone where construction is expected to begin Monday.

Officials say the new westbound express lane will mirror an eastbound lane that opened in 2015.

The lane is expected to open in early 2021 and will extend from the Veterans Memorial Tunnels to the U.S. 40 exit at Empire Junction.

A proposal to ban abortions at 22 weeks in Colorado moved closer to being on next year's ballot last week.

The state's title board, made up of representatives of the Secretary of State's Office, the state Attorney General's Office and the Legislature's legal office, agreed the measure dealt with only one issue as required by state law and approved preliminary wording for the ballot.

Wildlife advocates are seeking a court order that would force U.S. officials to consider if grizzly bears should be restored to more Western states following the animals' resurgence in the Northern Rockies.

Grizzly bears are protected as a threatened species outside Alaska. An estimated 1,900 bears live in portions of Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Washington state.

Colorado Democrats, including Gov. Jared Polis, celebrated the U.S. Supreme Court's decision Thursday to place on hold Trump administration plans to include a citizenship question on the 2020 census.

 

Polis and lawmakers say the decision will help ensure a population count that delivers the fast-growing state its fair share of federal funding over the next decade.

A 55-year-old restaurant manager died and more than two dozen others were taken to hospitals Saturday after being overcome by carbon monoxide at a New York mall, police said.

Suffolk County police identified the man who died as Steven Nelson, a manager at the Legal Sea Foods restaurant at the Walt Whitman Shops in Huntington Station on Long Island.

Police said 28 others affected by carbon monoxide were taken to area hospitals.
