Eleanor officially starts August 4th, 2020.

Growing up in the valley listening to KAJX in her parents’ car on the way to school, Eleanor learned the power and urgency of community storytelling. She was further captivated by the medium while interning at APR after graduating from Middlebury College in 2015.

From there, Eleanor moved to New York where she covered issues of climate justice and women's empowerment for SiriusXM Radio and launched several podcasts from soup-to-nuts. Eleanor recently finished a project interviewing hundreds of New Yorkers about their dreams and fears for an interactive audio-visual exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum by the photographer and muralist, JR.

Making these kinds of personal connections with people from all walks of life and creating empathic spaces for them to tell their stories fuels her work. Eleanor is delighted to be back home in the Rocky Mountains working with the Aspen Public Radio team and local residents to shine a light on the critical issues that shape our valley.

For Robin and Steve Humble, opening their own restaurant Free Range Kitchen and Wine Bar in Basalt after decades in the local food and wine scene was a dream come true. But the Humbles said this dream has felt more like a nightmare now that they’re limited to takeout only.

Last week, Governor Jared Polis asked the federal government to extend work authorizations for all Deferred Action Childhood Arrival (DACA) recipients whose permits expire this year. The policy grants temporary study and work status to immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children.

Last week, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security, or CARES, Act was signed into law. The $2 trillion COVID-19 rescue package includes what are called Small Business Administration, or SBA, loans.

Last Thursday, Meat & Cheese owner Wendy Mitchell stood outside her restaurant wearing latex gloves and serving free, vegan squash soup and buttermilk biscuits to passersby. Mitchell calls this "Bonnie's Soup Kitchen," named for the manager who came up with the idea. 

“She just had this idea that there’s so many restaurant people that are immediately unemployed, that we should do something for the community because so many of our customers are restaurant people, industry people,” Mitchell said.

Usually El Korita Restaurant in Willits is buzzing with energy, no matter the night of the week. Families singing happy birthday, a crowd of people at the bar ordering margaritas and a line of locals out the door, waiting for a table. 

On a recent day, though, restaurant owner Tito Gamboa was the only one there.
