Adventure Film Fest Promises to Take Viewers on a Ride

Carbondale’s Five Point Film Festival kicks off Thursday. The adventure film event is in its sixth year, but Executive Director Sarah Wood says their mission remains the same.

"We’re continuing to grow, but we’re really centered around our five guiding principles and that’s what five-point stands for, and those are balance, commitment, purpose, humility and respect."

She says those principles are shared by those who lead lives of adventure. Many of the films focus on such individuals. The films come from all over the world and have names like “Destined for the Cold” and “Joy of Air.” One called called “Split of a Second” follows a wingsuit world champion.

Wood says many of the films can be classifed as “adventure porn” but several have artistic elements, too. She says the films take viewers on a ride.

"It’s more than just showing up to watch a handful of films every night, it’s about the experience and the roller coaster and the emotion we’ll take you through each program," she says.

The four-day festival starts Thursday with events around town. The films will be screened at the Carbondale Recreation Center.
