Annual bike auction raises $7,000

The annual Aspen Police Department bike auction raised a record amount of money for the city.

The cash raised from the round-up of abandoned bikes, skis, snowboards and storage containers will go into Aspen’s general fund.

A cooking pot sold for a dollar. The biggest seller was a downhill-bike going for $450. In total, $7,000 wasbrought in - a thousand more than last year.

The City Police Department hosts the auction right before the Ride the Pass event known as the  “unofficial beginning of bike season.” In years past, the funds were used for extra equipment for the police force, but this year’s earnings are not yet earmarked for anything in particular.
