Attendees can learn about the history behind the Aspen Chapel’s architecture at a lecture Monday evening.
In the 1960s, Aspen Chapel founder Bishop E.M. Yost traveled throughout Europe. He admired the small, stone churches with towering steeples in the French Alps. He returned to Aspen inspired to build a French-style chapel here.
Nicholas Vesey, the spiritual leader of Aspen Chapel, says the building is also iconic because of its location at the entrance of town.
"It’s a fantastic welcoming symbol for Aspen," he said.
Monday night, local architects and church officials will discuss different aspects of the church’s design. The Aspen Chapel will also seek feedback from attendees on whether new modifications should be made to the church, such as adding a yoga studio or coffee bar.
The talk, “Build It And They Will Come," begins at 5:30 p.m.
