Aspen council discusses supporting the arts

Aspen City Council is looking to establish a task force to support the arts in town.

Aspen is the only city in the Roaring Fork Valley without a cultural arts commission, but they’re starting to explore how to support creative industries.

At the beginning of the year, Aspen City Council started researching other cities, like Santa Fe and Austin, with commissions that support a strong cultural arts identity.  They looked into the economic impact of arts on communities and met with leaders from arts organizations in Aspen, who were mostly supportive of the idea of a new board.

But council wants to move slowly and has proposed starting with a task force.  It would do things like bring experts to town from communities who have successfully promoted the arts, and meet with leaders from arts businesses and nonprofits in Aspen.

The work session starts at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
