Aspen Seeks Input On Rio Grande Recycling

Aspen wants input on the Rio Grande Recycling Center.

Over 200 people visit the center daily to drop off glass, cardboard, metals, plastic, batteries, textiles, and seasonal waste, like Christmas trees or grass clippings. Last year, the center accounted for 20 percent of Aspen’s recycling.

Pitkin County will stop paying for the center this August. The city is picking up the bill and estimates it will cost between $150,000 to $300,000. The money will have to be pulled from other parts of the budget.

The city is asking the recycling center’s users where their tax dollars are best spent. Options include moving to a cheaper system that requires sorting recycled materials, or closing the center all together.

The survey is available online.
