Aspen Words’ LaMee departs, returns to passion

Maurice LaMee was always a theatre guy. Even from his childhood, he was able to express himself on stage better than he could as himself.

“... Some of the grief and the anger I had about my own childhood … it sounds kind of funky, but it was that processing of some of that stuff for me,” he said. “I thought acting was the way to do it.”

Now he’ll be leaving his role as Aspen Words executive director, and pursuing a career of acting and education. First, he’s directing Theatre Aspen’s production of “Buyer & Cellar,” which opened this past weekend.

It’s a one-man show, where LaMee said the actor has to work in a difficult and intimate environment.

He said that although he is an introvert, he wouldn’t be able to handle that sort of pressure.
