Ballot language solidified in Basalt

Grassroots TV

The Basalt Town council approved a pair of public land ballot measures after debating the specific language of the questions late into the evening Tuesday night.

Question 2A asks voters to approve a purchase of property along the Roaring Fork River currently owned by the Roaring Fork Community Development Corporation.

Question 2B will ask voters if the town can take on debt to make that purchase.

The council took public comment after going over four options for how Question 2A would show up on the ballot. Some citizens showed support for wording providing strict square footage guidelines while others wanted an option that would provide more flexibility going forward. The approved measure states that one acre of the property can be used for commercial or public use while the remaining 1.37 acres must be used as a town park.

There was unanimous support on the council for removing “residential” as a zoning option. Councilwoman Katie Schwoerer said it would be “unconscionable” to add housing to the development plans, when the city evicted residents in order to create the public park.

Last night was the final opportunity for the council to solidify that ballot language prior to the November 8 election.
