Battlement Mesa drilling pushed back to 2017

Elise Thatcher

An oil and gas company says it’ll wait until 2017 to drill inside Battlement Mesa boundaries.

Ursa Resources can drill two pads inside the development, which is across Interstate 70 from Parachute. The initial plan was to start construction this summer, but the company has decided to instead break ground in more than a year, in 2017.

“We have a few locations lined up to drill outside [Battlement Mesa boundaries], which is what the community, Battlement Mesa community requested we do first,” says Don Simpson, Vice President of business development for Ursa. Simpson says there are four such pads near the development but not inside it. He maintains the low price of natural gas is not affecting what is drilled when.
