Carbondale discusses drinking in the streets for summer First Fridays

At their Tuesday meeting, the Carbondale Board of Trustees will discuss if they’ll officially allow people to drink alcohol in the street during First Fridays this summer.

The First Friday committee has proposed an “entertainment district,” where those 21 and older would be allowed to drink in the downtown blocks already closed to traffic. The idea is to encourage more movement between shops and restaurants.

Carbondale’s police have expressed concern about monitoring the large area. The First Friday committee has offered to hire 14 additional security guards to help.
