Census Undercount Could Shrink County Funding

A local committee is worried a citizenship question on the 2020 census will cause Pitkin County to lose federal funding.

The U.S. government allocates money for schools, roads, hospitals and other human services based on census information.

Each resident represents $2,300 in federal funding for the state. If they’re not counted, Colorado doesn’t get that money.

Aspen’s “Complete Count” committee estimates that a citizenship question would deter enough respondents to lead to a loss of over $400,000 annually for Pitkin County.

This month, the United States Supreme Court will decide if that citizenship question will make it on the 2020 Census.
