Chopper work to cause delays in Glenwood Canyon

CDOT

Delays up to 30 minutes are expected Tuesday on I-70 through Glenwood Canyon. A helicopter will be helping to repair rockfall fences.

There are a few high up rockfall fences in Glenwood Canyon that aren't visible from a car window. The fences act like baseball mitts and catch falling rocks in the wire mesh. Several of these are in need of repair.

One helicopter will be flying new steel poles and mesh up to crews on a steep canyon face. The operation was supposed to begin Monday but was delayed because of weather.

The delays will likely exacerbate traffic backups for motorists traveling in and out of Glenwood Springs because of the Grand Avenue Bridge construction.

A massive rock slide closed the canyon for several weeks in 2016.
