City Council Sorts Out Aspen's Recycling Problem

City of Aspen

Aspen is taking over the Rio Grande Recycle Center from Pitkin County in August.

A recent survey suggests overwhelmingly Aspenites want it to stay open. What services it’ll provide and what that will cost is uncertain.

City council will discuss the results Monday.

Ninety-seven percent of survey respondents favor keeping the recycling center open. Over half want to keep it as is, where no sorting is required.

The other option is for users to sort their own recycling, which will save the city money. It would also give the facility room to accept food waste and scrap metal.

Depending on which option the city pursues, the annual price tag will be somewhere between $75,000 and $250,000.
