Native American ruins have been discovered in the path of a proposed Colorado highway construction project.

Researchers say the ruins found south of Durango include human and animal bones and shells.

The Durango Herald reports that the ruins were discovered while surveying for realignment of U.S. Highway 550.

Archaeologists brought in after the discovery found indigenous ceremonial sites, large pit houses and living quarters.

The Colorado Department of Transportation says archaeologists have a few months to investigate the ruins before the $100 million construction project begins in spring 2020.
