Day of the dead arrives alongside Halloween

CCAH

Dia de los muertos is being celebrated in Carbondale tonight as part of a partnership between local groups.

The Valley Settlement Project, Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities and the Thunder River Theatre Company are coming together again to celebrate Dia de los Muertos at the Launchpad and Third Street Center in Carbondale.

The holiday is celebrated starting on Halloween and continues through the second of November. Festivities traditionally include setting up altars for the dead and wearing skeleton masks, food, dance and music.

It’s believed that the barrier between the living and the dead is the thinnest during this weekend.

Amy Kimberly from the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities says it is one of the few times when they have a community event where it is truly a full representation of the people who live there.

“I feel it’s a truly integrated event. That’s a huge part of what makes the night so lovely.”

The event starts at 5:30. For more information go to www.carbondalearts.com.
