Eagle County residents open to sales tax increase for more affordable housing, child care

Elise Thatcher

Eagle County residents support raising sales taxes to fund more affordable housing and child care. If approved, such services also could get beefed up in the Roaring Fork Valley.

The county surveyed 500 residents by phone in May about the need for more housing and childcare for workers. 70% of respondents said securing both in Eagle County is a problem. More than two thirds then said they would pay more sales taxes to fund housing developments and early childcare projects.

A representative of Eagle County said officials are considering increasing such services. If approved they could be located on the Roaring Fork Valley side of the county. Valley residents are grappling with both issues.

More than 70% of respondents said Eagle County is headed in the right direction and the economy there is doing well.
