Early Snow Doesn't Benefit All Of Aspen

Aspen saw a 1 percent drop in sales tax this November, compared to last year.

Early season snow allowed Aspen Mountain to open early, which was good for some industries.  Sports equipment and clothing saw the largest increase in sales, up 29 percent from last year. Overnight stays and restaurants also saw marginal gains.

All of these increases, however, were offset by a 32 percent dip in sales tax on construction, due to winter weather.

According to Aspen Auditor Anthony Lewin, it’s not all bad news. Sales for 2018 are tracking 4 percent ahead of 2017.
