Festival Notes - August 4, 2015

  Today is Tuesday, August 4th.
A free Spotlight Recital today at noon at the beautiful Aspen Chapel showcases top student talent.
At 1 today in Harris Concert Hall, pianist Steven Osborne gives a master class.
At 4 today, the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen Orchestra gives a free concert featuring this summer’s conducting students, and it will be full of musical fireworks. Stravinsky’s Fireworks opens the program, followed by Oliver Knussen’s Flourish with Fireworks played by this summer’s brass competition winner. Also, on the program, Mahler’s dramatic and triumphant 1st Symphony, composed when he was only in his twenties. For two early performances, Mahler gave the work the title “Titan” after the novel by Jean Paul, but specified that the piece was not in any way “about” the book. The nickname is often used today, but properly only applies to those two versions.
At 6pm, head over to the Aspen Art Museum’s rooftop terrace to enjoy Music with a View. Admission is free.
The American String Quartet returns to Aspen for a recital tonight at 7:30 in Harris Concert Hall. Mozart’s Quartet in D minor, one of the six dedicated to Haydn, opens the program, followed by Bartok’s 2nd Quartet and the Dohnanyi Piano Quintet No. 1 with pianist Anton Nel.

Classical music reporter Chris Mohr has loved classical music since he was twelve. “And I owe it all to radio,” Chris explains. “I grew up in a farm town east of Cleveland. One day I turned on the local classical radio station. They were playing Vivaldi, and it was like the gates of heaven opened up to me!" Chris is also a composer, and is working on a 53-note-to-the-octave oratorio, "Melodies of the Shoreless Sea." This is his ninth summer working for Aspen Public Radio.
