The field of candidates to fill a vacant judge post that serves the Roaring Fork Valley, has been narrowed down.

A nominating commission selected two candidates for the job that opened after Judge Gail Nichols announced she would retire this fall. The nominees are Jefferson Cheney of New Castle and Chris Seldin of Basalt. Cheney works at a private law firm in Glenwood Springs. Seldin is the Assistant Pitkin County Attorney. The decision is now in Governor John Hickenlooper’s hands. He has 15 days to appoint one of the nominees to serve as district court judge for the Ninth Judicial District.

The position pays nearly $160,000 a year and oversees civil and criminal cases in Pitkin, Garfield and Rio Blanco counties.
